Once again, my beloved Dallas Cowboys have lost an early-round playoff game. All I can is that I am very thankful to have been old enough to enjoy seeing the Cowboys of the 1990’s win three Super Bowls! I have a lot of sympathy for people who became loyal Dallas Cowboys fans in the late 1990’s or any time thereafter. After these painful playoff losses, I can always make myself feel a bit better by reliving the epic moments of watching Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, and the rest of the amazing crew DOMINATING while I was in high school and college. Seems like ages ago!
What will it take to get back to the Super Bowl? Not sure, but one of the ingredients will probably be a new head coach. Mike McCarthy has racked up great records during the regular seasons, but obviously has issues leading his team to wins against top contenders. Beating up on the New York Giants and Washington Commanders is always fun, but we need to get to the next level! Instantly, we have all been hearing about Bill Belichick being the guy to replace McCarthy. Sure, I would love to see him as the new Dallas Cowboys coach. I just don’t think this is a realistic idea. I would remind everybody that since Jimmy Johnson left the team in 1994, Jerry Jones has not hired a head coach that was not willing to be his “Yes Man.” Let’s look at all of the coaches he has hired since Jimmy Johnson left: -Mike McCarthy -Jason Garrett -Wade Phillips -Bill Parcells -Dave Campo -Chan Gailey -Barry Switzer None of the above-mentioned coaches were known for being “Take Control” types of coaches. They all appeared to go along with whatever Jerry Jones wanted. Some people would say that Bill Parcells was not a pushover, but is that true? Remember the 2005 NFL draft when Parcells wanted Dallas to select Marcus Spears with their first pick? Jerry Jones overruled him and the Cowboys ended up selecting DeMarcus Ware. One could argue that Jones made the right call, but regardless, he made Parcells look a bit weak during that moment. Imagine if Bill Belichick was hired and was pleading that Dallas select a certain player in the first round in the upcoming draft. Do you think he would be OK if Jerry Jones disagreed with his choice and overruled him like he did with Parcells? I could be wrong, but I don’t think Belichick would be OK with that! Jerry Jones wants a “YES Man” and Bill is likely not that guy. So, who becomes the new coach, then, if McCarthy is fired? Who knows? Heck, maybe Jason Witten could be that guy! He just finished coaching a high school team to an undefeated championship season! Plus, we all know that Dallas LOVES this guy! How about it, Jason?
